Being a
successful persuader takes time to learn and it is a skill that requires you to
have excellent communication skills. There are various steps to achieving this
and for creating a powerful delivery of your message.
Step 1 –
Who are You?
When
attempting to get people to do something for you they must know just who you
are. You need to earn their respect, trust and their friendship. Remember you
are looking at creating long term relationships here.
Before
creating a speech or message you need to take the following things into
account:
- Will the audience respect me for who I am?
- Does everyone know who I am?
- Are you a trustworthy person?
- Are you an authority on this particular
subject?
Step 2 –
Connecting with Your Audience
An
effective persuader will know how to connect with their audience. Ways to do
this include:
- Using words that bring to mind feelings
- Address things with stories and not just
boring facts and data
- Before your presentation meet the audience
if possible and smile at them and shake hands with them
Step 3 –
Organize Your Speech
With any
speech you always have a message or goal in mind and you want to make sure that
yours comes across clearly. You can do this in several ways:
- Be certain that your message makes sense
- Back up your information with facts and
figures when necessary
- Have a direct call to action that will
result in the desired action being taken
Step 4 –
Get People on Your Side
It always
helps to have other influential people on board before you make your mass
appeal to a group. You can achieve this in advance if you collaborate with like
minded people before giving your speech.
Invite other co-workers or friends to work with you on this particular
project or assignment. This also provides you with social proof as well as
giving you testimonials.
Step 5 –
Prepare in Advance
This is one
of the most important steps to creating a powerful message or presentation.
Advance preparations are the key to your success. We are talking here about
knowing who your target market is. The more you know about your audience before
delivering your speech the better you can prepare your message. By doing your
research you can expect a better outcome resulting in your desired actions
being taken.
When creating your message include passion
and emotions but never start to dictate your thoughts to your audience. Instead
craft your message so that it subtly persuades people to your point of view.
