Due to the popularity of social media sites
there is a new job opening for social media managers. The role of a social
media manager is to help businesses and individuals get started with social
media. The client receives help with creating their accounts and profiles and
in creating suitable content for each platform.
Many companies hire a social media manager
as they either don’t have the time to set up their own accounts or they don’t
know how to get started.
Before you create your social media
accounts it is important to think about how you want to use them. This is very
true if your main purpose is for promoting your business.
It is really helpful to figure out what
your main objective is. What is it that you want to achieve by using social
media?
Your choices could include:
- getting
your customers and clients to interact on your site
- branding
yourself as an expert
- creating
a business image
- building
brand recognition
- creating
local exposure
Your next step is to know and understand
who your target market is. As with any marketing event you will get better
results if you run a targeted campaign. This way you can expect to get quality
leads and/or visitors to your sites. If possible try and create a list of the various
types of people you want to have visiting your site. Sometimes it helps to make
this list as detailed as possible.
You may want to include:
- Age range
of prospect
- Education
- Financial
income
- Location
- Specific
interest
When doing market research any successful
company is going to know what their competition is doing. The same goes for
social media, check out the sites of your competitors.
It is perfectly acceptable for a company to
put together some form of competitive analysis so why not do the same before
setting up your social media sites?
To do this just search for your competitor
by name and follow the links to the various social sites, don’t forget to check
out their LinkedIn profile as well. If
you like you can follow these people or just check to see how they use their
sites.
Things to look for include:
- Do they
have lots of likes?
- Do they
receive tons of comments?
- Are they
using graphics and images?
- How often
do they post?
- Do they
run giveaway events or offer special discounts or coupons?
If you find that your competitor is getting
plenty of activity on their site then you want to apply the same basics to your
profiles. Just be sure not to copy them, come up with your own unique angle and
add your branding and your personality to it.
At the same time if they aren’t getting any
activity then you have just discovered what not to do. Look for another
competitor or similar business and take the time to learn how a successful
business is creating interaction on their sites.
