How to Set Up Your Own Copywriting Business

Now that you have decided on copywriting as your business model, your next step is to find clients. This can often be the trickiest step of all, but not to worry you do have options.
There are plenty of freelance sites on the internet where you can post your services. Many copywriters use these sites as a way to build up a portfolio. While it is a relatively easy way to attract clients the downfall is that you have to bid on projects. Sometimes the client is more concerned about price than the quality.

Do a Google search and look for sites like Odesk, freelancer dot com and Elance. At the time of writing Odesk and Elance were about to merge!

If you want to use these sites I really only suggest doing so to build your portfolio. Otherwise you may find yourself always writing copy for low paying projects.

The best way to set up your copywriting business is to create your own website. This isn't as difficult as it might sound either. You simply need a domain name, around $10 and a hosting company, another $10 per month.

You want to use something called wordpress to run your site. This is the easiest method around and saves you from having to learn html code and building a website from scratch.

Wordpress has lots of free themes that you can choose from. Search for themes with the words freelance, magazine and portfolio to find suitable themes for your new business.

On your site you can create an About Me page that describes your experience level, your interests and a way for potential clients to contact you.

Also you should set up a portfolio page where you can link to examples of your work. Please do not link to work that you have done without your clients explicit permission. While most clients are happy to have you display their work, some are not. You really don't want to run the risk of losing a client because you didn't get their permission.

Of course setting up your site is just one step. You still need to get your website in front of people. You can do this by adding a blog page to your site and then blogging about copywriting on a regular basis. You could write about different ways a client could use a copywriter and even offer some copywriting tips.

Don't forget to share your new website on your Facebook and Google+ pages, these are great places to connect with people online.
